History of Commonwealth Games: The Commonwealth Games are arranged between the member countries of Commonwealth of Nations. CWG are arranged every four years and are the third mega sports event in the world after Olympics and Asian Games.
The 2010, Commonwealth Games is the Nineteenth Commonwealth Games and the ninth under the current name, CWG were first held in the year 1930 under the name “British Empire Games”. The game was given as “British Empire and Commonwealth Games” in the year 1954. In the year 1970, the games were rechristened to “British Commonwealth Games”.
In the Year 1978, the name for the games was changed to “The Commonwealth Games” and it is retained till date. The 2010 edition of the games will be hosted by New Delhi, India and is scheduled to commence on 3rd October 2010 and will come to an end on 14th October 2010. India is hosting the Commonwealth Games for the first time. The date of 3rd October which will mark the beginning of 2010 Commonwealth Games are not far off and India is getting ready to be the perfect host. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. The ceremony will be an event full of grandeur and show India cultural diversity and unified strength. It will follow the traditional ceremonies attached to Commonwealth Games as well as many musical shows and fireworks blended with an Indian touch. It is expected that Prince Charles from Great Britain will grace the occasion.
Opening Ceremony of Commonwealth Games 2010: In the opening ceremony, there will be flag parade of countries participating in the Commonwealth Games. Australia, being the host country for last four years Commonwealth Games (CWG, 2006) will lead the parade as per the customary practices. As per the custom, India, the current host country will stand last in the parade. The opening ceremony parade is an important event. In the opening ceremony parade all the participating nations will march in alphabetical order. During the parade, India’s national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” will be played.
Queen’s Baton relay is also an important event and is the curtain raiser for the games. The baton’s journey starts from Buckingham palace with a relevant message from the queen. The first and the last baton carrier are chosen from a list of well known athletes belonging to the host country which is India for 2010 Commonwealth Games. It is expected that Indian President, Mrs. Pratibha Patil will grace the Queen’s baton relay at the opening ceremony. India’s ace shooter, Abhinav Bindra will be the first baton carrier for 2010 commonwealth baton relay. At the opening ceremony the baton will be handed over to her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II or her representative by the last runner.,
The baton arrives in India on 25th June 2010 through Wagah border crossing Pakistan and entering Indian State of Punjab. The CWG baton relay will conclude with the final relay runner bringing it to the Queen or her representative during the opening ceremony scheduled to be held on 3rd October 2010 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, where the Queen will read her message and mark the commencement of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Almost 7,000 players of 71 Commonwealth Games Associations from 53 commonwealth countries are to participate in the games but they are frightened and reluctant after some unusual incidents happened in the city. There will also be a welcome ceremony after the inaugural ceremony where athletes of all the participating nations will be welcomed and Green Flag will be shown as a sign for commencement of the games. Jawaharlal stadium will host three flags, the flags of the present host country (India), the last host country (Australia) and the next host country (Scotland).
Apart from the traditional events associated with Commonwealth Games, the 2010 CWG will also host musical performances as part of opening ceremony. The musical performances will be delivered by many well known and established foreign and Indian artists. The opening ceremony will also be graced with the presence of many Bollywood personalities and celebrities from the field of politics, sports and media. Impressive fireworks will light up the skyline and will add to the excitement of the 2010, CWG opening ceremony.
